HELLER, Johanna 1847-1933

The ranks of Howard county's pioneers are thinning. Saturday, June 3, 1933, Mrs. Johanna Heller was called to her eternal rest. Death came at 3 p.m. in the home of her granddaughter, Mrs. Lee Powers at Charles City. Calmly, peacefully, like a tired child at evening, she fell asleep in her Savior, a victim of old age.

Mrs. Heller was born in Kleve, Hannover, Germany, May 14, 1847. When she was two years old her parents immigrated to America and settled in the vicinity of present Watertown, Wisconsin. Here she grew to womanhood. At the age of eighteen she was united in holy wedlock to Casper Heller, who was called from her side in 1909. In 1870, 63 years ago, this God-fearing, frugal, and hard-working young couple made their slow and laborious way across the Mississippi and finally selected a homesite in Howard County, Iowa, three miles southeast of Riceville, which has ever after been called the Heller place, and is now the home of her only surviving son, Theodore.

Born of Lutheran parents, she was baptized in the Lutheran faith early in infancy, confirmed in this church at a later date, and by the grace of God, has remained a faithful devoted member of St. Peter's congregation during her many years in Iowa. In her, one of the few remaining charter members of this congregation have entered the church triumphant.

She reached the ripe old age of 86 years and 20 days. On Tuesday, June 6, 1933, we laid her tired body to rest at the side of her husband in the cemetery of her church, south of Riceville. Her pastor, Rev. Walter Leckband, was in charge of the services in the home, in which she passed away at Charles City, iowa, and in the church, where he spoke words of comfort to the bereaved.

The mother of eight children, she lived to see six of them precede her into eternity; Frances (Mrs. Chas. Worple), Dorothea (Mrs. H. Kruger), Elizabeth (Mrs. Chris Kruger), Emma, William, and Caspar. Anna (Mrs. James Smith) of Waterloo, Iowa, and Theodore alone are left to mourn her departure. Nineteen grandchildren, 44 great-grandchildren and many friends will miss kind, generous, and friendly Grandma Heller.
