Adelaide “Ada” (Reynolds) Yager Crum 1873-1971

Ada Reynolds was born January 7, 1873 in Riceville, Iowa, the daughter of Elijah Brice Reynolds and Adelaide (Brown) Reynolds. She passed away on March 15, 1971 in Charles City, Floyd, Iowa. (SS death index).
Her first husband was Henry Arthur Yager, who was born December 15, 1865 in Winnesheik Co., Iowa and died August 1, 1942 in Riceville, Iowa. He was the son of Henry Yager Sr. and Mary (Musser) Yager.
Her second husband was Nelson Crum, the son of Sylvester Crum and Sarah (Saint John) Crum.
His first wife Ame E (Nelson) Crum died in 1945.
Note** (all of them are buried in the Riverside, Riceville, Mitchell, Cemetery.

MRS. ADA CRUM, RICEVILLE, OBSERVES 90TH BIRTHDAY
Riceville – Mrs. Ada Yager Crum, Riceville, who observed her 90th birthday Monday, is one of the oldest life-long residents of Riceville.
Mrs. Crum was born Adelaide Reynolds, and has lived all her life in Riceville. Her father operated a stagecoach line here. He was a Civil War veteran who lost his leg in battle.
She was married to Henry Yager in 1895, and he owned a store under what is now the Dvorak Grocery building.
She recalls the day of the great fire of 1901 very vividly. “It was a terrible thing, there wasn’t any equipment available like that we have today; men carried water in buckets. They climbed on top of the buildings to fight the fire. I saw all of the buildings on Woodland Avenue go down….I’ll never forget that sight…”
Mrs. Crum said merchants built shacks at the west edge of Main Street until permanent buildings could be erected.
Her husband subsequently bought out the Riceville Recorder and ran the weekly until his death in 1942.
Mrs. Crum was married to Nelson Crum, a retired farmer, in Harrison, Arkansas, in 1947, and until his death in 1956, they traveled throughout the western United States. During her span of 90 years, Mrs. Crum has traveled by oxen, horses, trains, bus, automobile, planes and on foot.
On her 90th birthday she walked to the post office for her mail. She now makes her hoe with Mrs. Clara Button in Riceville.
Mrs. Crum’s son, Lester Yager, is a linotype operator for the local paper. Her other son, Donald Yager, is part-owner of a paper in Malta, Montana. She has a daughter, Mrs. Lillian Stober, who lives in Charles City.
Mrs. Crum is a member of the First Baptist Church of Riceville, with the longest membership in the church’s history. She joined the church in 1912
