James Bernard Dargan was born June 20, 1882 at Riceville, Mitchell, Iowa to John Edward Dargan and Mary Ann Conlin. He attended rural schools at Jamestown and helped his father with farming.

He can be found in the 1885, 1895, and 1900 censuses at Jamestown, Howard, Iowa living with his parents and siblings.

In 1885 census: John Dargon 44, Mary Dargon 35, Katie Dargon 17, Thos Dargon 16, Elisa Dargon 18, Nellie Dargon 9, Geritude Dargon 7, Agnes Dargon 5, James Dargon 2, John Dargon 76.

1900 census: John E. Dargan 59, Mary A Dargan 51, Thomas Dargan 30, Gertrude Dargan 22, Agnes Dargan 20, James Dargan 16, Alloysis Dargan 12, Mary Dargan 7.

1910 census: John Dargan 69 Mary A Dargan 60, Thomas Dargan 41, James Dargan 27, Mary Dargan 17. (Obviously spelling errors in the original censuses)

James married Emma Florence Auringer August 1, 1910 at the Immaculate Conception Church, Riceville, Mitchell, Iowa.

Emma Florence Auringer was born February 16, 1886 at Jamestown, Howard, Iowa to Daniel Auringer and Maria Jane Torney. Died October 13, 1958 Iowa City, Iowa.

Besides farming, James operated a dray line, delivering goods from the rail station in Riceville to businesses in the area.

James and Emma Dargan were parents of eight children all born at Jamestown, Howard, Iowa. They are:
1. James Daniel Auringer born September 5, 1911, never married, died from leukemia June 28, 1983 Riceville, Mitchell, Iowa.
2. Bernard Vincent Dargan born May 6, 1913, married Lorayne, died October 20, 2002 El Paso, Texas, Served in the U.S. Army.
3. Florence Mary Dargan born January 28, 1915, married George Lewis Badker March 19, 1931 Adams, Mower, Minnesota, died May 25, 2003 Osage, Mitchell, Iowa.
4. Agnes Catherine Dargan born October 28, 1916, married Adrian Edward Kleckner June 25, 1937 Riceville, Mitchell, Iowa, died March 13, 2006, Osage, Mitchell, Iowa.
5. Mary Josephine Dargan born April 26, 1918, married Clark William Voaklander January 11, 1939 Austin, Mower, Minnesota, died October 31, 1999 Osage, Mitchell, Iowa.
6. Francis Joseph Dargan born September 21, 1920, married Jane Olive Bowen September 28, 1951 Nashua, Chickasaw, Iowa, died March 14, 1981 Cedar Falls, Black Hawk, Iowa.
7. Paul Jerome Dargan born July 16, 1924, married Mary Kerr, served in the U.S. Army.
8. Rosemary Dargan born July 16, 1927, married Leo Lamar Kinter, Iowa, died May 26, 2006 Des Moines, Polk, Iowa.

1920 census: James B Dargan 37, Emma F Dargan 33, James D Dargan 8, Bernard V Dargan 6, Florence M Dargan 4 yrs, 11 mos; Agnes C Dargan 3 yrs, 2 mos; Mary J Dargan 1 yr, 9 mos.

1930 census: James B Dargan 48, Emma F Dargan 44, Florence M Dargan 15, Agnes C Dargan 13, Mary J Dargan 12, Frances J Dargan 9, Paul J Dargan 5, Rose M Dargan 2 9/12.

James Bernard Dargan died March 20, 1963 at the Mitchell County Memorial Hospital in Osage, Mitchell, Iowa.

His funeral was conducted at the Immaculate Conception Church in Riceville, Mitchell, Iowa. and burial was at the Calvary Cemetery there. His pall bearers were: Herb Fouts, Bernard Quinn, George Badker Jr, Gregory Badker, Tim Kleckner. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, a brother and five sisters.
