IN MEMORIAM
Judge A. S. Faville was born in Mannheim, Herkimer county, New York, February 21, 1823, and died at Berkley, Virginia, December 23, 1900.
When a young man he was a student in Casanovia Seminary, New York, and at Poultney, Vermont. In 1849 he went to California, sailing around Cape Horn, and spent two years in the gold fields. He then went to Australia, where he remained for two years.
In 1854 he came to Mitchell county, Iowa, being one of the first pioneers here. He entered the land and made the well-known Faville homestead, just north of Mitchell, where he and his family lived for many years.
In 1855 he married Miss Esther D. Crary of Knox, New York, who survives him. He served Mitchell county in many public offices. For several years he was the county Judge, and was also county auditor, county surveyor and a member of the House of representatives from Mitchell and Howard counties in the 13th General Assembly. He taught the first school in Mitchell county, and was always proud of the fact. He lived in Mitchell county until 1892, when he moved to Chicago, where he made his home until the spring of the present year, when he removed to Norfolk, Virginia, where his son, Dr. Faville, and family live.
He leaves surviving him his widow and three sons, Dr. George C. and Alfred S. of Norfolk, Virginia, and Hon. Fred F. Faville of Storm Lake, Iowa, and an adopted daughter, Julia A. Faville.
The above is the brief record of a long and useful life. The news of his death brought sorrow to thousands of hearts in this county and state. For nearly forty years there was hardly a person in this county who did not know Judge Faville and his gracious and talented wife. From the earliest to the latest years, their home was to Mitchell county a center of moral, educational and social life.
In early boyhood in Mitchell county, the writer first saw and ever afterward has known the Judge, and feels impelled to pay this tribute to his memory; to one who was not only an honored, able and high-minded citizen and man, but who aside from relatives, was the most consistent, generous and helpful friends he ever knew.
He was a man of most comprehensive mind. . . He was a member of the Congregational church. . . [truncated]

“Judge A. S. Faville, formerly of this county, died at Norfolk, Virginia, where the body was temporarily buried. Hon. Fred Faville of Storm Lake, Iowa, was with his father at the time of the latter’s death, and writes that the body will be brought to Mitchell for final interment some time in the future.”
