ASHMORE
Robert N. Ashmore was born in Tennessee on April 17, 1821, and died at the home of his eldest daughter, Mrs. Mary Bailiff in Osage, Iowa, on August 20, 1906.
In early life he left his southern home and went to Illinois. A little later ge came still further north to Dane County, Wisconsin, and then in 1855, to Mitchell county, Iowa. He first settled in Rock Township, and later moved to Mitchell, where he continued to reside until a year ago last July, when because of feeble health he came to Osage to live with his daughter, who ministered to his needs with a daughter's devotion.
In 1844, at her home in southern Illinois, he was united in marriage to Miss Jane Berry. For more than forty years Mr. and Mrs. Ashmore journeyed together sharing life's joys an dsorrows an denduring the hardships of pioneer days.
She passed away about 20 years ago. Eight children were born into their home, five of whom are still living, two sons, Henry of Artision, S. Dak., and James of Rock Creek; and three daughters, Mrs. Mary Bailiff of Osage, Mrs. Eliza Henderson of New Castle, Calif., and Mrs. Lena Wild of Woonsocket, S. Dak. There are also fourteen grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren living. Other near relatives surviving are three sisters, Mrs. Cornelia Taylor of Perry, Iowa, Mrs. Jane Pierce of Tracy, Minnesota, and Mrs. Harriet Hicks of California.
Mr. Ashmore was one of the earliest settlers of Mitchell county, and with his family knew from experience the privations of pioneer life. In his later days he loved to recall those early scenes and the old friends. . . .
