Fatally Injured by AutoGERALD HYLAND SUFFERS
SKULL AND BACK HURTSACCIDENT OCCURS NEAR
CONSOLIDATED SCHOOL AT DISMISSALORCHARD, IOWA - Gerald Dean Hyland, 6, the only child of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Hyland of Orchard, died Tuesday at Nissen Hospital in Osage of injuries suffered Monday afternoon when he was struck by an automobile driven by Carroll Watters, farmer northwest of Orchard.
The accident occurred about 4 p.m. as the Orchard consolidated school was dismissing and the Hyland child reportedly ran out of the building and directly into the path of Watters car.
Gerald suffered a skull fracture and back injuries and never regained consciousness after the accident.
The child's father was employed at the Al Wetter garage here until it closed two weeks ago.

The newspaper gave his name as "Gerald Lee Hyland" but we changed it to "Gerald Dean," to agree with the tombstone.
