Lewis James Nicholson 1928-1944

RITES HELD FOR BOY, 15, DROWNED HERE

Funeral services for Lewis James Nicholson, 15, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Nicholson, 1714 Pennsylvania N. E., were held at the Champion Funeral Home at Osage at 2:30 o’clock Monday afternoon. Burial was at Osage.

The boy was accidentally drowned while fishing in the Winnebago River Saturday afternoon opposite of 2050 Carolina N.E.

He had been fishing with John Frank, 13, who resides at 1728 Delaware N.E. The smaller boy did not see his companion fall into the river, but he located the splash, according to police who investigated the accident.

Fireman and sheriff’s men were also summoned and a searching party was formed, using boats of owners along that section of the river and the fireman’s boat. With assistance of neighbors, a line of boats was formed across the river and a systematic hunt made for the body, grappling hooks being used.

At 7:05 p.m., the body was recovered downstream from where the drowning occurred. Firemen applied artificial respiration using the resuscitator, for about an hour but their efforts were in van. The boat in which Deputy Sheriff Cal Dwan was working was the one which recovered the body.

Nicholson was born at Osage, June 25, 1928. He moved to Mason City with his parents about a year ago and was a student at Lincoln school.

Surviving are his parents, and 5 brothers; Pfc. Harry, in Italy; Pvt. Harold, in Ireland; Lester of Mason City; and Marshall and Stanley at home; and by one sister; Mrs. Leonard Bessman, Eldora.

The Patterson Funeral Home in charge.
