WOMAN DIES IN AUTO AND TRUCK CRASH

Osage, Ia. – Mrs. David Cockrum, 63, was killed at 4:30 p.m. Monday when the automobile she was driving collided with a semi-trailer loaded with 23 market cattle, on highway 218 six miles north of Osage, according to Sheriff Theo Horn of Mitchell County.

Mrs. Cockrum was thrown through the left window to the pavement and suffered a skull fracture, dying a few minutes later as a Stacyville physician arrived on the scene. Keith Marshall, driver of the truck, escaped injury. An inquest was scheduled for Tuesday afternoon.

Mrs. Cockrum, driving south was returning to Osage after having taken her son, Oliver, to Little Cedar, he having brought his car to Osage for repair before going to Rochester to return his 10 month old daughter, Juanita home.

According to Sheriff Horn Mrs. Cockrum stopped at the junction of the black road and highway 218, and as she started up again drove into the path of the semi.

Investigation showed that Marshall, headed north veered his truck to the left and into the ditch in an effort to avoid the collision but the right front fender of the semi struck the front of the Cockrum car. The cattle were not injured and were loaded into another truck by 6 p.m. Monday.

Mrs. Cockrum was born as Maude Dawson in September 1883, near Clinton, Mo., where she was married to David Cockrum and the couple established their first home.

The family to St. Ansgar in 1931 and the following year began farming near Little Cedar. They purchased the home of the late J. A. Holliday here last fall and retied to Osage in December.
