WORLD WAR VETERAN SAW 11 MONTHS SERVICE OVERSEAS
Clear Lake – Funeral services for C. A. Beckner, who died Sunday morning at Veterans’ hospital, Des Moines, following an extended illness, were held at the Methodist church at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dr. B. W. Riner, pastor of the church and chaplain of the local Legion post, conducted the rites and burial was in Clear Lake Cemetery. Ward’s Funeral Home made the arrangements.
Pallbearers, former classmates of Mr. Beckner from Osage, were Harry Johnson, Sam Clay, Ben Donsker, Frank Chapman, Jay Whitaker and Gersham Lashbrok.
Mrs. R. A. Monoghen sang “Beautiful Isle of Somewhere” and “The Old Rugged Cross, “ Mrs. Cleo Olson and Mrs. A. J. Kruck had charge of the flowers.
Charles Albert Beckner, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Beckner, was born May 16, 1896 at Osage, spent his boyhood there and was graduated from Osage High School. During the World War he enlisted and was assigned to the three hundred twelfth engineers, eighty-seventh division, serving two years, 11 months of which was overseas.
On November 24, 1917, Mr. Beckner was united in marriage to Miss Veneta Mary Counsell of Osage. To this union were born two daughters, Jeanne and Berdean, both students in the local high school.
Mr. Beckner was graduated from the engineering department of Iowa State College, Ames, in 1925. In June, 1933, the family came to Clear Lake where they opened the I.G.A. grocery and market. For the past two years Mrs. Beckner has operated the store and Mr. Beckner, whose health required life in the open, was employed as a civil engineer by the federal government.
Last July Mr. Beckner complained of extreme fatigue and grew weaker each day, his heart being acutely affected. For several weeks past he had been very ill and his death was not unexpected.
Besides Mrs. Beckner and two daughters, Mr. Beckner leaves his parents and two brothers, Claude of Detrout and Myron of Chicago. He was a member of the local Masonic Lodge and of Esterville post of the American Legion.
