RICEVILLE, IOWA - Stanley Setka, age 93, of Riceville, died of natural causes Friday (April 22, 2011) at the Riceville Family Care & Therapy Center.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, April 27, at United Methodist Church in Riceville with the Rev. Pam Kranzler officiating. Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery in Riceville.

Family members will greet visitors from 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 26, at Lindstrom Funeral Home and one hour before services at the church.

Stan was born March 14, 1918, in Osage to Anna (Slaichert) and Vaclav Setka.

Following the death of his father during the Spanish influenza pandemic, Stan was raised by his mother and stepfather, Mato Saraga. The family farmed in the Osage and Riceville area.
Stan served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1941-45. A staff sergeant in the 34th Infantry Red Bull Division, he was among the first American soldiers to enter the European Theatre. Stan fought in North Africa and Italy and was awarded three Bronze Stars.

On April 28, 1946, Stan married Ruth Stanton of Cowell in the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They lived in New Hampton for one year before settling in Riceville where they raised their five children. For nearly 20 years, Stan owned and operated S.J. Setka Construction - earning a reputation as a builder of quality homes and farm buildings. In 1968, he was appointed tax assessor for Mitchell County, a position he held until his retirement in 1983. Through the Iowa State University Extension Service, Stan became one of the state's first Master Gardeners and was known for the vegetables and fruit he grew for farmers markets and local customers.

Stan is survived by his wife, Ruth, their children, Diane Setka, Riverside, Iowa; Mary Barnes (David), Denver, Colo.; Al Setka (Marianne), Des Moines; Anne Metzler (Ken), Riverton, Wyo.; eight grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, sisters Lil Pollock, Medina, Ohio, and Betty Klee, Green Bay, Wis. and brother Frank Saraga, Mission Viejo, Calif.

A son, Stanton, in 1967, two sisters, and a brother preceded Stan in death.

A memorial fund has been established to assist several charities in Riceville.
