Emella Bartz was born in Gross-Virchow, Pommerania, Germany on the 26th of April, 1840. Her maiden name was Radke. Soon after her birth she was baptized in the name of the Triune God, and on the 3rd of April, 1853, renewed her baptismal vow by confirmation, to which vow she remained faithful to her dying day.
On the 5th of April, 1866, she married Frederick Sthuelke; God however, in his divine wisdom had determined that this happy union should exist for but a short time. A few months later, Frederick Sthuelke died, leaving behind his widow and an infant daughter.
In 1868, on the 27th of April, the widow with her little daughter boarded a ship and sailed to America making their home in Wausau, Wisconsin, here the deceased entered into wedlock for a second time; her husband's name was John Bartz. In the following year both went to Iowa settling there permanently on their farm in Newburg township.
For twenty years they were blessed abundantly by the giver of all good and perfect gifts. On the 24 of March, 1879, however, the husband died leaving the deceased a widow for a second time. Having stayed on the farm with her children for a number of years, the deceased, in 1897, made her home in St. Ansgar, where she lived to her dying day.
For two or three years before her death she was afflicted with a painful illness which caused her death on the 8th of March 1902, reaching the age of 61 years, 10 months and 12 days.
Six children -- three sons and three daughters -- three sons-in-law; two daughters-in-law; and twelve grandchildren, mourn the loss of a beloved and esteemed mother and grand-mother.
