FAIRMONT, Minn. - Viola M. Marquardt, 98, of Fairmont, Minn., passed away Tuesday evening, February 22, 2011, at the Stacyville Community Nursing Home in Stacyville, Iowa.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 5, at St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Fairmont with interment in Lakeside Cemetery in Fairmont.

Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, March 4, at the Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.

Viola Mary (Shane) Marquardt was born on March 17, 1912, in Elkton, Minn., the daughter of Francis and Mary Ann (Schneider) Shane. She grew up on a family farm north of Taopi, Minn. She was the second of five siblings which included Roy, Floyd, Bob, Frank Jr. and Effie. She attended school in Elkton, Minn.

On April 27, 1932, Viola was united in marriage to Ehrhardt G. "Jim" Marquardt in Austin, Minn. The couple resided in Austin until moving to Fairmont in 1936, where Jim was employed by the Fairmont Water and Light Commission. This union was blessed with three children, James, Frank and Sandra. The couple shared 39 years together until Ehrhardt passed away on Nov. 28, 1971.
Along with being a homemaker, Viola worked at Central School in Fairmont with the school lunches for 25 years until her retirement in 1977.

Viola was a member of St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Fairmont, where she was active in the St. Isadore Circle. She was also a member of a birthday club. Viola enjoyed spending her free time baking, sewing, counted cross stitch and most enjoyed tending to her flowers. She loved roses, tulips and anything colorful.

Viola lived in the same family home for 68 years, from 1938 to 2006. When she needed assistance with her daily care, she moved to Goldfinch Estates in Fairmont for two years. She resided for the last two years at the Stacyville Community Nursing Home in Stacyville.

Left to cherish her memory include her sons, Dr. James E. Marquardt and his wife, Joni, of Boulder, Colo., and their son, Matt Marquardt; Francis G. Marquardt and his wife, Barbara, of Brush, Colo., and their children, Tara Christensen, Michael Marquardt and Lisa Marquardt; daughter, Sandra A. Koenigs and her husband, Jerry, of McIntire, and their children, Dan Koenigs, Todd Koenigs, Jenny Sullivan and Mike Koenigs; 16 great-grandchildren ranging in age from 23 to 1 years old; sister-in-law, Ruth Shane of Taopi, Minn.; and nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Along with her parents, Francis and Mary Shane, Viola was also preceded in death by her husband, Ehrhardt Marquardt; four brothers, Roy, Floyd, Bob and Frank Jr.; and her sister, Effie Calkins.
