DUANE J. "DEWEY" BRUNNER
NEW HAVEN, IOWA - Duane J. "Dewey" Brunner, 76, of Bettendorf, formerly of New Haven, died Friday (Oct. 20, 2000) at the Genesis Medical Center, West Campus in Davenport.
Duane was born on November 9, 1923 at the family home in New Haven, the son of Julius and Nell (Loftus) Brunner. He attended Catholic grade school in New Haven and graduated from the Pillsbury Military Academy at Owatonna, Minnesota in 1941. He entered military service with the 8th Air Force Group in Thurleigh, England during World War II. He was a ball turret gunner on a B-17 bomber and flew 30 missions over Germany. After the service he worked for his father at the creamery in new Haven. He also lived and worked for a time in California and Alaska.
He was united in marriage to Glea Jordan on Sept. 10, 1960 at Mason City. In 1977 they moved to Bettendorf where he was sales-operations manager at Meadows Warehousing and retired in 1987. On Nov. 24, 1963 their son John was born. Duane was a devoted family man, a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Davenport, and an avid sports fan.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Peter's Catholic Church, New Haven with the Rev. Ray E. Atwood officiating. Interment will be in the Park Cemetery in Nora Springs at 1 p.m. with military rites by the Osage American Legion Post 278.
Visitation will be held from 4:30 to 8 p.m. today at Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home, 702 State St., Osage, where there will be a scripture service at 7 p.m. and one hour before services at the church on Monday.
Survivors include his wife, Glea Brunner, of Bettendorf; one son, John Brunner and his wife, Tracy, of Madrid, and their son, Alexander; and one sister, Vivian Mork, of New Haven.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Vernon Brunner.
