Vincent A. Loftus

Age: 91

Residence: Greeley, Colorado

Tribute: Vincent Augustus Loftus was born in Riceville, Iowa to Walter and Evelyn (Montague) Loftus, he was one of 14 children. The son of a farmer and railroad worker, he attended schools in New Haven, Iowa.

On March 16, 1939 he married Edith Frances “Judy” Cerny in Austin, Minnesota, where they worked at the Hormel Packing Plant for several years. Together they raised seven children.

During World War II, Mr. Loftus worked in a shipyard in Stockton, California. After the war he worked for the Holtz Tire Company in Lodi, Calif., then moved the family back to Austin. Mr. Loftus served six tours of duty on the civilian construction crew, helping to maintain tires of heavy duty equipment used to build an airfield in Tuley, Greenland.

The Loftus family moved to Colorado in 1957, where Mr. Loftus worked as a heavy duty tire mechanic and master re-capper for General Tires, first in Denver, then in Greeley. Later he worked for Shupe Trucking in Greeley, then Ringsby Trucking in Cheyenne, Wyoming and for Farr Better Feed of Kersey, Colorado until his retirement in 1977.

Mr. Loftus was elected Mayor of Garden City, Colorado for one term in past years and continued to serve on its Town Board until his death. He was a member of the Moose Lodge in Evans, and an Honorary Member of the VFW in Garden City and he was very proud of the service of his three sons in the U.S. Navy. Soon after their 40th Anniversary, his wife Judy died in February, 1981. In the following years, he enjoyed the company of a special friend, Marie Snyder of Greeley. Mr. Loftus remained active and lived independently in his home until his death. He enjoyed baking and cooking, reading the daily newspapers, working in a small garden, and attending the frequent gatherings of his large extended family. In his earlier years, he enjoyed fishing, hunting and socializing with many friends.

Mr. Loftus died Thursday, February 15, 2007 at North Colorado Medical Center.

Survivors: Three daughters, Judy Werner and husband Calvin of Greeley, Shirley Johnson and husband Robert of Northwood, North Dakota, and Della Viestenz and husband Gary of Detroit Lakes, Minnesota; four sons, Walter Loftus and wife Bonnie K. of Eaton, Colorado, Richard Loftus and wife Karen of Greeley, Vincent Loftus of Bellechasse, Louisiana, and George Loftus of Waxahachie, Texas; three brothers, Raymond “Jack” Loftus of Lodi, Calif., Charles Loftus of Galt, Calif. and William Loftus of Waseca, Minnesota; sister, Ada Hildenbrand of Oxnard, Calif.; 15 grandchildren; 31 great grandchildren; one great great grandchild.

Preceded in death by: Wife, Edith Loftus; parents; nine brothers, Norbert, Robert, Gathian, Thomas, Bernard, Lloyd, Harald, Francis and James; and one grandchild, Mark Allen.

Visitation: 12-2 p.m. Tuesday, February 20, 2007 at Adamson Downtown Chapel in Greeley.

Service: 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 20, 2007 at Adamson Downtown Chapel in Greeley.

Interment: Sunset Memorial Gardens in Greeley.
