Karen Marie Hansen, was born May 18, 1849, near Bergen, Norway. Her parents were Knut O. Selvold and Ingeborg Aslakson. She was baptized in the Hosanger church and confirmed in the church at Alvorsund, near Bergen.
She was one in a family of four brothers and three sisters. Only one brother survives, namely, O.K. Berg of this city.
July 26, 1876, she was united in marriage to Lars Hansen, also of Bergen. To this union two children were born, Hans K. Hansen and Laura Hansen.
In September, 1879, Mr. Hansen died, and the following year she, with her two children, came to St. Ansgar and made their home with her brother, O.K. Berg, when she was engaged as cook at the St. Ansgar Seminary.
In April of 1892 the daughter, Laura, died, at the age of thirteen years.
Grandma Hansen had always been blessed with good health, and worked faithfully every summer with weaving rugs.
In December, 1928, she was taken sick at her brother's home, and her health gradually failed. She suffered patiently and was confined to her bed at her son's home for five weeks. She expressed her wish so often that the Lord would soon take her Home, and on Sunday, September 15, she passed peacefully away.
She attained the age of 80 years and three months. She leaves to mourn her departure, one son, H. K. Hansen, and his family; four grandchildren, and one brother, O.K. Berg.
The funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon from the First Lutheran Church, the Rev. Langehough officiating. Mrs. Karl Kolstad of Minneapolis sang two beautiful solos, "One Sweetly Solemn Thought" and "Asleep in Jesus."
Those from away who came to attend the funeral were: J.W. Hansen, H.E. Jensen and Mrs. Karl Kolstad of St. Paul, Minn.; Anton Berg of Minneapolis; Mr. and Mrs. E. Richardson and two sons Melvin and Harold of Puyallop, Wash.; Mr. and Mrs. J. Price of Blooming Prairie, Minn.; Grant Berg of Waverly, Iowa; Mrs. Lewis Haberkorn and Mrs. Frank Chatman of Osage, Iowa.
