Ben Jones Killed
On R.R. Track at
Cedar Falls Tues.Benjamin Jones was instantly killed Tuesday afternoon at 1:35 while walking along the Illinois Central tracks at Cedar Falls, apparently unable to hear an approaching passenger train.
Mr. Jones is said by his sister, Mrs. John McCollough and niece, Mrs. Howard Hemley, to be very hard of hearing, and train crew members said he gave no indication that he heard the repeated blasts of the locomotive whistle. Brakes applied after it appeared he did not know of the approaching train, could not halt it in time to avoid striking him.
The body, badly crushed and mangled, was taken to a funeral home in Cedar Falls.
Brother Also Killed by Train
Mr. Jones was born June 23, 1871, in Des Moines county, Iowa. He and a sister, now deceased, came to Osage many years ago to make their home with their sister and brother-in-law, Mrs. and Mrs. John McCullough, and Mr. Jones assisted with janitor work and in operating the extensive truck gardens of the family.
Following her husband's death Mrs. McCullough went to Cedar Falls to make her home with her daughter, Mrs. Remley, and Mr. Jones later also went there to live. In his youth he had lived on a farm near Mediapolis, Iowa.
He had been suffering from rheumatism this spring and his fatal walk had been the first time he had been away from the house for any length of time.
He is survived only by his sister and niece. A brother, David, a railroad conductor, was killed by a switch engine in Cedar Rapids several years ago.
