SMITH, OSAGE, DIES SUDDENLY

Osage, Iowa – Clyde H. Smith, 67, died suddenly Friday morning at a hospital in Rochester following a throat operation. He was thought to be recovering but went into a coma Thursday, and died at 1 o’clock Friday.

He was born in Brownville in 1877, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Smith. He received his education in the rural schools and was a graduate of the Cedar Valley seminary, Osage. In March, 1895, he was married to Agnes Judd, Riceville. They moved to Osage 12 years ago.

For a number of years, Mr. Smith farmed near Riceville and Mitchell. Since coming to Osage, he had been secretary to the Farmers Mutual Fire Insurance company. He had been a member of the board of education in Mitchell, and for 25 years was on the Mitchell county board of education. Mr. Smith was also a director of the Farmers Elevator and a long time member of the Methodist church board.

Surviving are his wife, three daughters; Mrs. Guy Buttolph, Osage; Mrs. George Buck, LeRoy, Minn.; and Mrs. Howard Dexter, Waterloo; one son, Berkley, Waterloo; and six grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete.

In the death of Clyde H. Smith, Osage loses another of its best-liked business men. Mr. Smith passed away at a Rochester hospital on February 5, 1943, after he had rallied from an operation and it was believed that his recovery was assured.

Clyde H. Smith was born December 15, 1875, at Brownville, Iowa, the eldest son of edward and Victoria Smith. He grew to manhood in the Brownville vicinity.

He attended the local school and was graduated from the Cedar Valley Seminary in Osage; afterwards teaching school.

At the age of 16 years he became a member of the First Methodist Church of Brownville. He was united in marraige with Agnes Judd, at Brownville, March 11, 1895.

Mr. and Mrs. Smith engaged in farming for 35 years in Mitchell county. Then they moved to Osdage and for the past 11 years, he has been very active in business and community life. he has been the secretary of the Farmers Mutual Fire Insurance Association; a member of the Mitchell COunty Board of Education for the past 35 years; a director of the Osage Grain & Supply Company, and a director of the Mitchell COunty Fair Boards for several years. He was a charter member of the Mitchell COunty Farm Bureau and a membr of the official board of the Methodist Church.

Mr. Smith was afflicted with a throat ailment and on January 26th submitted to a major operation at a Rochester hospital. As stated above, he apparently was making a good recovery when complications developed.

He leaves to mourn his death, his widow, mrs. Agnes Smith; three daughters: Mrs. Guy Buttolph, Osage; Mrs. George Buck, LeRoy, Minnesota; Mrs. Howard Dexter. waterloo; and one son, Berkely Smith, Waterloo; and six grandchildren.

Surviving also are two sisters, mrs. Arthur Atwood of Newfoundland, Minnesota, and Mrs. Eva Champion of Santa Monica, California, as well as a host of friends. His parents preceded him in death.

He will long be remembered by his family and friends, for his pleasing personality; his generosity, his kindness and optimistic outlook on life.

Funeral services were held at the Methodist church on Sunday afternoon, with Rev. G. Hartong, pastor, presiding, and burial was made in the Osage Cemetery.
