William Henry Addington was born May 3d, 1834, In Erie county, Pennsylvania. When six years of age, his parents removed to Racine, county, Wisconsin, where he lived until 1863, when he was married to Gertie Paten and moved to Stacyville, Iowa, here he has since lived except five years, two of which were spent in Missouri and three in Elgin, Illinois. Ten years ago last June, Mrs. Addington was called to the other world. Soon after, Mr. Addington bought a farm near David and lived there until last fall when he decided to quit the farm owing to failing health.
About the first of October last year he was taken to his bed with rheumatism and continued to grow worse and for the last six months before he died he lost the use of his lower limbs entirely. September 21st he was taken to Elgin, Illinois in hope that the physicians in the hospital at that place might help him, but he was beyond the help of medical skill and Tuesday, November 14, 1899, at 11:15 a.m. he breathed his last at the home of his son, William Addington.
The funeral was held at the Congregational church in this place last Thursday, Rev. Preston, preaching. The remains were laid to rest beside those of wife in the cemetery at Stacyville.
Mr. Addington was a generous kind-hearted man, of more than average ability, and popular with all who knew him. His last year was one of intense suffering, but his days of suffering are over.
Of seven brothers and sisters, one brother, F.E. Addington, of Stacyville, and a sister, Mrs. Everett, of Muskegon, Michigan, survive. Of three children, one, the eldest son died at the age of nine years and the others, W. H. Addington, of Elgin, and C. H. Addington, our county recorder, mourn his departure.
