William Laughlin 1932-1952

OSAGE YOUTH LOSES LIFE ON KOREAN FRONT

Osage – Cpl. William Laughlin, 20, of the First Marine Division, was killed in action in Korea July 24th, according to word received by his father, Clarence Laughlin, of Osage. He has five brothers, four of them now in the military service and another served in World War II.

A letter received by relatives Monday afternoon, written the day prior to his death, stated he ws “in the front lines this time for the second week.” He had been in Korea since December.

Cpl. Laughlin was born in Osage January 9, 1932, son of Clarence and the late Margaret (Bailey) Laughlin. He attended the Osage schools, worked with a construction crew at Rochester, Minn., and with the Oliver Corp. at Charles City prior to enlisting in the Marines in July 1951.

In November, 1951, he was married at Oceanside, Calif., to Betty Campbell of Osage.

Besides his wife and father he leaves five brothers; Robert, of Winona, Minn., a veteran of World War II; Stewart, serving with the Navy; Glenn, serving in the Air Force; and Pvt. Richard and Pfc. Kenneth, serving in the Army; four sisters; Mrs. Wayne Smith, Atlantic; Daisy, Oakland, Minn.; and Mary and Margaret, both of Mason City; and his grandparents; Mr. and Mrs. Austin Laughlin and Mr. and Mrs. Judd Bailey, of Osage.

This was the third Mitchell County death in the Korean War.
