The late Marvin Kofoot took his job as St. Ansgar mayor seriously - and he did it with even-handedness and a smile, friends say.

"He was good-hearted; you couldn't have anyone nicer to work with," said Donna Rachut, deputy clerk at City Hall. "This is hard."

Kofoot, 79, died Wednesday of injuries suffered in a traffic accident on Highway 9, east of Manly.

His wife, Milda, remains hospitalized with injuries at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

"Such a nice gentleman," said City Councilman David Tollefson, who is now serving as mayor pro tem.

"He was well-liked by everyone. I don't think I ever heard him say anything bad about anyone," Tollefson said.

Tollefson and Kofoot served together for some years on the City Council. In 2007 Kofoot was elected mayor. He was serving his second term at the time of his death.

Tollefson said Kofoot loved the town, his country and his church. He was an active member of the American Legion.

"He was a friend," Tollefson said.

Osage Mayor Steve Cooper said he and Kofoot talked occasionally about issues related to their respective towns.

"It's a tragedy," Cooper said. "I know he was well-liked ... and I think he was very good for St. Ansgar. Here's someone who was doing what he could to serve his community, and then something like this happens. It's a loss."

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 29 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in St. Ansgar, the Rev. Dr. Byron Northwick officiating. Burial will be in Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday at Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, 207 S. School Street, St. Ansgar.

Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, St. Ansgar is in charge of arrangements, 641-713-4920.
