Anna Arp (Schoel) KETELSEN 1875-1961

Anna Marie Arp was born Jun 6, 1875 Rosendorf, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany to Heinrich Henry Arp and Bertha Schoel. She emigrated 1887 to Dysart, Tama, Iowa when 12 years old with an uncle and aunt, Mr. & Mrs. Chris Wendorf and an older brother Julius. (The Mrs. being Bertha Schoel's sister). Anna's older brothers and sisters had already emigrated to Tama, Iowa.

The Wendorfs settled at Dysart, Iowa and began to operate a livery stable and saloon. Anna was expected to help at both places. She would rub down the horses and feed them and she loved to do this. But when finished, she was expected to wait on customers in the bar. She disliked this work very much. In 1893, six years after Anna had left Germany, her parents emigrated to Tama County, Iowa and Anna once again lived with them.

Anna married August Ketelsen on March 10, 1898 at Clutier, Oneida, Tama, Iowa. Four children were born:

1. Henry Jurgen, (born January 7, 1899, married
Ellen Dorothea Lundberg November 14, 1923 Osage, died February 11, 1981 Riceville, Iowa) 4 daughters;

2. Wilma Bertha (born February 23, 1900, married Earl Hartwick Snyder October 3, 1922 Osage, died April 28, 2001), 1 daughter;

3. Maria Anna (born September 6, 1902, married Louis Frank Peterman April 8, 1920 Waterloo, Iowa, died October 24, 1983 Beaver Dam, Dodge, Wisconsin) 10 children; and

4. Elmer August (born November 5, 1909, married Gladys Ivey Olsen March 23, 1930 St Ansgar, died September 25, 1989 Osage, IA) 4 children.
Family found in the 1910 census on a farm near Clutier at Oneida, Tama, Iowa.

In the spring of 1911, the family moved to Burr Oak, Mitchell, Iowa by train. Daughter Lorraine Dorothy was born at Burr Oak August 18, 1917. (Lorraine married Avery Savre Brush October 15, 1939 at Osage, Iowa, died May 31, 2005 Grants Pass, Josephine, Oregon); 1 daughter.

The 1915 through 1930 censuses show the family living at Burr Oak, Mitchell, Iowa and farming. After son Elmer married, August and Anna moved to a home in Osage, Mitchell, Iowa. Anna died Feb 27, 1961 at Osage, Mitchell, Iowa.
