August Schmarzo Sr.

August Schmarzo Sr. died early this morning at his home, from the usual infirmities of old age. Had he lived until June 9, he would have reached the age of 95 years. There are very few people in this community – or any other – who reach that advanced age.

Mr. Schmarzo was born in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, and came to America with his parents when a small child.

As a young man he settled on a farm near Little Cedar, and lived there until twenty-one years ago, when he retired from active life and moved into Osage.

Fifty-nine years ago he married Gustie Hensel, and to them were born ten children. Two died in infancy, but the others, with the wife, survive. They are: Mmes. James Willis, Albert Grover, Earl Lewis, Osage; Mrs. Nick Lorenzen, St. Ansgar; Ernest, August, Max, Osage and William of Detroit, Mich.

Funeral services will probably be held Saturday, and interment will be made in the Little Cedar Cemetery.

August Schmarzo

August Geog Mecheal Schmarzo was born in Wollin, Germany, June 9, 1841. He passed away in Osage, Iowa, April 16, 1936. Next June he would have been 95 years of age.

Mr. Schmarzo was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith in his native land. His father was, by vocation, a sheperd. The deceased was one of four children in the family. In early youth he was left an orphan. He was reared in the home of a grandmother. After he had served the required term in the German army he immigrated to America. He was then 21 years of age.

For a time he worked in the pineries in the state of Michigan. Later he came to Iowa and worked for some years at Mitchell. In 1873 he started farming for himself, near Little Cedar, where he continued until 1913, when he retired to Osage.

On October 12, 1877, Mr. Schmarzo was united in marriage with Augusta Hensel. To this union ten children were born. Two children have gone before, Louise, in 1898, and Anna in 1912. The surviving children are Mrs. Minnie Lorenzen, of St. Ansgar; Mrs. Amanda Willis, of Osage; Ernest, of Osage; William H., of Detroit, Michigan; Mrs. Amelia Grover, of Osage; August, Jr., of Osage, Max H., of Osage; and Mrs. Lottie Lewis, of Osage. Besides the children and widow, the deceased is survived by four grandchildren.

Up until the past year, Mr. Schmarzo has enoyed unusual health. His passing leaves another vacant place in the . . . stock, which built the northwest.

Funeral services were held at Champion funeral home Saturday, and interment was in the Little Cedar cemetery.
