Wallace "Wally" Roethler, 79, of Waukon, died Monday, September 13, 2004 at Northgate Care Center in Waukon, following a lengthy illness. Funeral services were held Wednesday, September 15 at 11:00 a.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church in Waukon, with Rev. Lynn G. Groe officiating. Burial with graveside military rites was in St. Peter's Lutheran Cemetery, Riceville, Iowa, at 2:30 p.m. Martin Funeral Home in Waukon was in charge of arrangements.

Wallace Edward "Wally" Roethler was born November 22, 1924, on a farm near Elma, Iowa. He was the son of Leo and Mae (Moosman) Roethler. He attended rural Howard County Schools and worked for several area farmers. Wally served in the US Navy during World War II as a Seaman First Class from 1943 until 1946, seeing action in the Pacific.

On September 5, 1953, he married Ellen June Kruger in Austin, Minn. Wally started working for a bottling company in Austin, and after a time operated his own area as a Pepsi distributor. He sold the business in 1962 and moved to Waukon where he and June owned and operated Holiday Lanes bowling alley for 21 years, until retiring in 1983.

Wally was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, VFW, American Legion and the Bowling Proprietor's Association. He enjoyed bowling, fishing and hunting.

Survivors include his wife June of Waukon; four brothers, LeRoy (Marge) of Elma, James (Anna Mae) of Riceville, Robert (Darlys) of Orchard, and Milo of Waterloo; a sister, LaVonne (Burl) Armstrong of Gilbertville; three sisters-in-law, June Roethler of Elma, Evelyn Roethler of Charles City, and LaVonne Klein of Riceville; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Jack, Donald and Kenneth; and a sister, Lucille Roney.

Casketbearers were Don Angel, Walt Wedo, Wayne Martin, Jim Gruber, Kevin Hoisington, and Wayne Topel.
