OSAGE, IOWA - Mavis V. Wieland, 88, of Osage died Thursday, September 23, 2010, of liver cancer at the Osage Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Osage.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Sept. 27, at Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage with Pastor Gary Gilbert officiating. Burial will be in the Osage Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home.

Mavis was born on October 11, 1921, in Mitchell County, the daughter of Harry and Alvina (Rieken) Reckner. She attended country schools. On April 19, 1944, she was united in marriage to Howard Wieland at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.

Mavis and Howard farmed in Floyd and Mitchell counties. They farmed all their life. She was always there to help Howard with the farm work. After they retired they spent 22 winters in Arizona and Oklahoma.

Mavis raised many gardens and enjoyed canning and freezing the fruits and vegetables. Cooking was another enjoyment, especially making pies. You could not leave her house without a cup of coffee, a home-baked treat and a friendly wave goodbye from the kitchen window.

She had an expertise and was gifted with a special talent for doing handwork and making small crafts. Mavis was noted for making beautiful hardinger stitchery. She taught hardinger stitchery beginners and advanced classes for several years while she and her husband wintered in Arizona. Mavis also taught tatting, knitting and crocheting to many ladies. Mavis and her husband belonged to a camping club and enjoyed camping in the summertime. She belonged to a local craft club and was a member of the V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary.

Mavis is survived by her husband, Howard Wieland, of Osage; a sister, Shirley (Henry) Fisera of Osage; nieces, nephews and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother Dale and his wife, Helen.
