Margaret “Maggie” (Gerhartz) Eschweiler 1858-1936

The life of Mrs. N. Eschweiler came to a close at her home southwest of Lime Springs, on May 27th, following a prolonged illness of a complication of ailments. She was a faithful Christian and uncomplaining sufferer and died fortified by the last rites of her Catholic religion, after everything humanly possible had been done to ease her suffering and prolong her earthly existence.

Maggie Gerhartz was born in Spillville,IA on Nov 11,185, the daughter of Michael Gerhartz and Anna Mary (Weiler) Gerhartz. She was 78 years,6 months and 16 days old at the time of her death Wed, May 27,1936, at 3:00am at her home four miles southwest of Lime Springs.

In 1877, she was united in marriage to Nicholas Eschweiler at Stacyville, IA. To this union were born ten children, two of whom died in infancy. Her husband, two sons and a daughter preceded her in death, namely Katie, Mrs. J.P. Dreis of Vermillion,MN, Joe of Cresco in 1923 and Herbert who passed away one year ago April 19.

Surviving are Mrs. M. M. Strouth (Clara) of Faribault, MN, Mrs. Dave Clewett (Lizzie) of Waterloo, IA, John of New Hampton, IA and Will and Agatha at home; one sister, Mrs. Lizzie Halfman of Stacyville,IA, 3 brothers; John and George Gerhartz of Stacyville, IA and Joe Gerhartz of Meyer,IA, 12 grandchildren and numberless friends.

Most of her life was spent at Stacyville, New Haven and Riceville, IA with the exception of the last twelve years, which were spent near Saratoga and Lime Springs, IA.
She was the happiest when she was at home doing something for her family.

A lovely tribute was paid her by her pastor when he said, “I never met a finer, nobler, or a better woman than our deceased friend, Mrs. Eschweiler. She was a mother and a good one, a wife and a faithful one and a kind neighbor and friend”.

Pall bearers were six nephews, namely; Mike, Albert, Aloys and Herbert Halfman, and Matt and Will Gerhartz.

Requiem High Mass was sung by Fr. Heatherington Friday morning at 9:30 am and the remains laid beside her husband in Calvary cemetery at Riceville,IA.

Those from a distance to attend the funeral were: Mr. And Mrs. M. J. Strouth and five children of Faribault,MN, Mr. And Mrs. John Strouth and Mr. And Mrs. Charley Strouth and Mrs. Barbara Becker of Faribault, MN, Mr.and Mrs. Emanuel Renner, Anna Bowers and Anna Wagner of Osage, IA, Mr. And Mrs. Henry Dreis and two children and J.
