NICHOLAS MUELLER

ITEM #1:

RICEVILLE, IOWA - Services for Nicholas Mueller, 86, retired farmer who died Monday at a Riceville nursing home of complications of age, will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Rosary at 8 p.m. Wednesday at Chisholm Funeral Home.

Survived by his widow, Rachael; four daughters: Mrs. Rosina Durbin of Meyer; Mrs. Mike Hartogh of Elma, and Mrs. Howard Bees and Mrs. Harry Duebner, both of Chicago; seven sons: Arnold of Riceville; Carl and Raymond, both of Dallas, Texas; Francis of Charles City; Paul of Chicago; William of Elkhart, Indiana, and Reynold of Des Moines; four sisters: Mrs. Josephine Klapprick of St. Ansgar; Mrs. Steve Klapprick of Adams, Minnesota, and Mrs. Helen Michaels of Stacyville; and a brother, John J. Mueller of Stacyville.

ITEM #2:

Nick Mueller was born on March 8, 1881 on the Mueller farm three miles south, one half mile west and again one-half mile south of Meyer, Iowa. He was the eldest son of William and Anna Mueller (daughter of Mathias and Christina Hueman).

He married Rachel Goergen on September 15, 1904, in Meyer, Iowa. After their marriage, Nick and Rachel lived on his father's farm and worked for his father. Later he was employed as a butcher in Stacyville, Iowa. Subsequently they moved to a small farm approvimately one and a half miles south of Meyer, Iowa. In 1912 they rented the large Mueller family farm from his father and in 1929 purchased it.

To this union were born seven sons and four daughters: Arnold 6-22-1905, Rosina, b. 4-9-1907 (Mrs. Henry Durben), Esther, b. 2-23-1909, (Mrs. Mike Hartogh), Agnes, b. 10-17-1911, (Mrs. Howard Bees), Carl (b. 1-18-1914, d.8-6-1973), Francis, (b. 4-17-1916, d. 10-4-1979), Raymond, b. 4-20-1918, d. 8-10-1976, Martha, 7-8-1921, (Mrs. Henry Duebner), Paul b. 3-3-1924, William, b. 3-14-1926, Reynold "Butch", b. 11-1-1929.

At the time of their Golden Wedding Anniversary Nick and Rachel had twelve grandchildren and no great grandchildren. As of this writing (September 1988) there have been born sixteen grandchildren, thirty-four great-grandchildren and eleven great-great-grandchildren.

They continued living in Riceville until Nick's death on Christmas Day 1967 and Rachel's on February 18, 1968.
