CORPORAL LESTER E. TORGERSON

Osage Corporal
Killed on Leyte

OSAGE, IOWA — Mr. and Mrs. Ole O. Torgerson of Osage have received a telegram from the war department stating that their son; Cpl. Lester E. Torgerson, was killed in action on Leyte island in the Philippines Nov. 24.

No other particulars were given but the telegram said a letter would follow.

Corporal Torgerson was engaged in farming with his father and brothers before his induction.

FOR OSAGE YANK

OSAGE, IOWA — A memorial service for Lester Torgerson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ole Torgerson of Osage, who was killed on Leyte Nov. 24, 1944, will be a part of the morning worship service at the Osage Lutheran Church Sunday.

Lester Torgerson grew up in Worth county and was in the army for about 10 years. In 1938 he came to Osage and was employed at the Cedar Valley produce plant.

VET RE-BURIED — Final rites were held at the Champion Funeral Home at Osage Tuesday for Cpl. Lester L. Torgerson who was killed in action on Leyte in the Philippines in November, 1944. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ole Torgerson of near Carpenter.

Cpl. Torgerson was killed instantly in an attack of his battalion from positions on Red Hill, Limon, on the island of Leyte when a Japanese artillery shell hit between the machinegun squads, inflicting heavy casualties.

He was buried in the village of Limon a half-mile from where he gave his life until removed for burial at home. He was 36 years old.
