Early St. Ansgar Settler

Vaclav Cerny (aka: Cherney) was born at Kuttenberg, Bohemia in 1826. He served as a soldier in the armies of his country for 10 years. His father served in the Napoleanic wars in Bohemia. In 1861, he and his parents, Catherine Cherney Kombretz, his step father, John and his step brother, Anton, came to New York City.

In early 1864 he married Theresa Sefcik (Shofcik) who came early in 1864. Theresa was born May 7, 1837 at Kokovice, Bohemia. They were the parents of five children; Mary (11-13-1864); James, who died in infancy; Barbara (April 26, 1869) in the New York City area; and Joseph E. (2-1-1872); Emma L (5-30-1875); Emil J., (8-21-1877) These 3 were born St. Ansgar Township and all attended Spring Valley Country School.

(1) Mary Cherney was born November 13, 1864 and married Frank Peterman and resided near Lyle, Minnesota. To this family were born Roy, Charles, James, Elmer, George, Philip, Laura and Anna. All lived in the Lyle, Austin and London, Minnesota area.

Mary died Jan 9, 1953 and Frank September 1939. Both are buried in the Woodbury Cemetery near Lyle.

(2) Barbara T. Cherney married Louis Joseph Cerny on January 7, 1889 at Osage, Iowa, the son of Frank Cerny and Mary (Mudra) Cerny. To this family were born: Lillian, Louis Joseph, Jr., Emma L. and Oscar L., in St. Ansgar and Liberty Township. In 1904, the family moved to Thief River Falls, Minnesota, living the rest of their lives there. Louis died August 28, 1943 and Barbara on October 17, 1947. Both are buried at the St. Ansgar Cemetery.

(3) Joseph Cherney was born February 1, 1872 and married Victorine McCulla, on December 6, 1900, the daughter of John McCulla and Ruth (Humphrey) McCulla. Joseph died February 1, 1955 and Victorine died May 6, 1946. They are both buried at the St. Ansgar Cemetery.

(4) Emma Cherney was born May 30, 1875 and married Emil Sedlacek December 23, 1895 in St. Ansgar Township. To this union was born Oliver in Mower County, Minnesota, Helen , Emil Jr. and Lucille born in Iowa. Emil farmed and did well drilling. In 1904, the family moved to Thief River Falls, Minnesota and in 1914 they moved to Covina, California. Emil ran a garage in Santa Monica. The family remained in this area and Emil died in 1949 and Emma on October 23, 1947. Both are buried in Covina, California.

(5) Emil J Cherney was born August 21, 1877 and married Arley Elaine Helm on January 28, 1905, the daughter of Reuben Helm and Jennie (Stratton) Helm.

Emil and Arley had five children born to them: Vernelle, Victorine, Richard , Milford, , Max, Milford and Victorine were born in Washington Township, Black Hawk County, Iowa while the others were all born in Waterloo, Black Hawk County, Iowa. Emil died on January 28, 1948 the victim of an accidental hunting accident. Arley was born July 3, 1884 in Washington, Black Hawk, Iowa and died November 29, 1951 in Michigan.
Emil is buried in the St. Ansgar Cemetery.

Vaclav died December 25, 1895 and Theresa died May 15, 1912. Both are buried in the St. Ansgar City Cemetery.
