Gertrude Hackenmiller was born January 6, 1865 to German immigrants Johannes Evangelist Hackenmiller (1819 - 1879) and Maria Mueller Hackenmiller (1830 - 1914) in Johnsburg, Illinois.
She married Matt Hemann in 1885. In 1893 they purchased the farm from Jatt's father.
They had eleven children: John, Mrs. John (Agatha) Kraus, Rose, Mrs. Ernest (Vernonica) Halback, Elizabeth (died in infancy), Anton, Susanna (Joined the Sisters of St. Francis as Sister Viola), Mrs. Anton (Margaret) Michaels, Mrs. Herbert (Frances) Halfman, Bernard and Delphin. Except for Sister Viola, the offspring all remained in the area and became farmers like their parents. They had 38 grandchildren.
Gertrude Hemann suffered from diabetes and, lacking proper medical treatment for that affliction, died on September 28, 1913 at the early age of 48.
Burial was at Visitation Catholic Cemetery, Stacyville, Iowa
