STORY ABOUT RAMONA “MONA” (HUESSELMANN) KENT EDDY DAUGHTER OF ALBERT AND ROSETTA (WOOD) HUESSELMANN

PUBLISHED IN THE WATERLOO SUNDAY COURIER, SEPTEMBER 27, 1950

Former Waterloo Area Woman Wins Success and $50,000 a Year

Osage – “Portia” has been facing life for about 10 years on the radio, but few Iowans are aware of the fact that her creator, Mona Kent, is a former Iowan who resided in Orchard, Osage and Cedar Falls.

The photograph in the newspaper shown , made about 30 years ago, pictures Mona in the days when she was Ramona Huesselmann and before she became a New York author with an estimated income of $50,000 a year.

She was born on a farm east of Orchard as the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Huesselmann and as one of six daughters and a son.

The five living daughters have all achieved success as homemakers or career women. Ramona attended Iowa State Teachers college at Cedar Falls for two years and then entered the creative field of radio in New Mexico and Chicago.

She wrote scripts for “Woman of America” and “Billy and Bob” and gradually “arrived” as a top author in New York. Last year she wrote a book, “Mirror, Mirror on the Wall,” which made best-seller lists.

Ramona’s sisters are hoping that sometime she’ll vacation in Iowa rather than Haiti, Europe or Canada, where she usually relaxes on holidays.

Her sisters are Dr. Bernice Tyner, a physician and surgeon in Colorado Springs, Colorado; and wife of a research chemist; Mrs. Vern Huffaker, secretary to the district sales manager of a mineral products company; Mrs. Roger Shook, a well-known aviatrix and wife of an aviator; and Joyce, In Omaha, Nebraska.

But all the family, even Mrs. Huesselmann, who now resides at 1105 West 23rd Street, Cedar Falls, has a flair for writing.

Osage friends haven’t forgotten the blond, high-strung child who has now won radio fame. They say, “We’re not surprised she’s made good. She had a way of making things happen.”
And they have---to the tune of $50,000 per year!
