Funeral for Civil War Vet
Will Be Held Friday by
Legion, Masons.

OSAGE, IOWA, July 26 — Horace Carpenter, 91, died at his home here early Wednesday, having been in failing health for several months.

He was born at Portage, Wisconsin, on February 18, 1843, and was married to Maria Cliene** at Portage, Wis. The couple celebrated a seventieth wedding anniversary last November.

He was a lumberman on the Mississippi 10 years, between Green Bay, Wis. and St. Louis. He came to Mitchell County, Iowa, in 1870, He was custodian of the county home one year, traveled out of Osage through 22 states as a mechanic for the International Harvester Company for many years and homesteaded near Beaubell, North Dakota. He enlisted as corporal in the Second Regiment Cavalry, Wisconsin Volunteers and was honorably discharged in 1861, disabled temporarily when thrown from a horse. He was a member of the local Blue Lodge being the oldest member any local Masonic order.

His death leaves but one surviving 50 year Mason here. William Allison, and but four Civil War veterans. His wife and a son, Ernest who is a theatrical producer taking companies out of New York, survive him. A daughter, Ida May, 4, died in 1868, and a son, William, 17, died in 1868, and a son, William 17, died in 1891.

Services in charge of his Masonic brothers and the American Legion will be held at Shelledy Funeral Home Friday at 2 p.m. with burial here.
