Matt Hemann, born in 1863, was the only surviving son of homesteaders Nicholas and Mary Hemann. He married Gertrude Hackenmiller in 1885. She had been born in Johnsburg, Illinois, also the daughter of German immigrants. In 1893 they purchased the farm from Matt’s father.

They had eleven children: John; Mrs. John (Agatha) Kraus; Rose; Mrs. Ernest (Veronica) Halbach; Elizabeth (who died in infancy); Anton; Susanna (who joined the Sisters of St. Francis as Sister Viola); Mrs. Anton (Margaret) Michels; Mrs. Herbert (Frances) Halfman; Bernard; and Delphin. Except for Sister Viola, the offspring all remained in the area and became farmers like their parents. They had 38 grandchildren.

Matt took pride in being a modern farmer, purchasing one of the early gasoline engines in 1907, a six-bottom plow in 1915 and one of the early autos, a Hupmobile, in 1916. Cash price for the car was $1,100. A light plant was installed in 1918 when electricity was still a rate thing.

Gertrude Hemann suffered from diabetes and, lacking proper medical treatment for that affliction, died in 1913 at the early age of 48. Matt Hemann lived until 1938.

He was a civic-minded man, serving at various times as president of the Stacyville Co-Op Elevator, the Co-Op Creamery and the Stacyville Savings Bank. Meanwhile his son Bernard had married Olive Halbach of Stacyville in 1927 and had a growing family on the farm.
So following Matt’s death, Bernard and Olive purchased the farm.
