dies at 97OSAGE, IOWA - Miss Sarah (Pet) Cleveland, 97, died Saturday morning at the Cleveland Hotel, in which she has been active more than 82 years. She has been the manager since 1901. She was the eldest person still in business in Osage, both in years and in time of service.
Born July 16, 1862, at Pardeeville, Wisconsin, she was the daughter of Rhodes Mortimer and Nancy
Cleveland. The family moved to Charles City when she was a child and came to Osage in 1877. She assisted her father in the hotel at that time and has been sole owner since the death of her mother in 1901.Miss Cleveland had the old hotel, known as the Merchant's Hotel, torn down in 1902 and built a new hotel of 43 rooms.
The only immediate survivors are a niece, Mrs. Ruth C. Hayward, Omaha, Neb., who has helped Miss Cleveland at the hotel the last year; and a nephew, Mortimer Cleveland, a Waterloo architect.
Funeral services will be Monday at 3 p.m. at the Champion Funeral Home here. The Reverend Charles Gunnell, pastor of Christ Episcopal Church, Waterloo, will officiate with burial in Osage Cemetery. The family has requested that no flowers be sent but suggest that those who desire should make gifts to the Wa-Tan-Ye Club's scholarship fund.
