David R. Jensen

David Roger Jensen, the son of Donald Robert and Darlene Ann Kelly Jensen, was born on September 21, 1954 at Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa. He was baptized at the Broadway Christian Church in Council Bluffs, Iowa and confirmed at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Harlan, Iowa. David attended school at Franklin Elementary School in Council Bluffs. The family then moved to Wilmington, California when David was eight where he attended Gulf Avenue School and later graduated from Phinneas Banning High School in 1973. After graduation, David attended L.A. Harbor College and was a P.H.C.C. apprentice.

After his schooling, David returned to Iowa where he bought an acreage and helped out on a neighbors farm. Dave also worked as a custodian at the Logan Church of Latter Day Saints. On April 12, 1985, David was united in marriage to Connie Lou Hoch at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Harlan, Iowa. Together they raised two children: Tara and Ryan. In 1994, David went to work for Coast to Coast (later Do It Best Hardware) in Harlan and worked there until his retirement in 2003 due to his illness.

David was quiet and never sought after the limelight. He always had a smile and lent a helping hand to anyone in need. He taught his children the importance of putting the needs of others before their own. In his spare-time David enjoyed model railroads, carving figurines, gardening and woodworking. He enjoyed history and even took part in a Civil War re-enactment. He cherished any time that he spent with his wife, children and his two grandchildren, Nicholas and Lauren. David immersed his life in his family. Every thing his kids were involved with, David was there. He coached baseball, was a scout leader, 4-H leader and even built his grandson his first tractor.

David died at his home, surrounded by his family, on Tuesday, February 3, 2004, attaining the age of forty-nine years, four months and twelve days. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents: Robert and Freda Jensen and his maternal grandfather, Lester LeVier. Survivors include his wife, Connie of Portsmouth, Iowa; his children: Tara and her husband, Brian Bork of St. Ansgar, Iowa; Ryan Jensen of Kansas City, Missouri; his grandchildren: Nicholas and Lauren Bork; his parents, Donald and Darlene of Wilmington, California; one sister, Donnetta and her husband, Ross Horney of Huntington Beach, California; his grandmother, Naomi LeVier of Lomita, California; other relatives and many friends.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Friday, February 6, 2004 at 11:00 AM at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Harlan, Iowa with Rev. Robert Hoefler as Celebrant. Honorary casket bearers were Bob Reis, Mark Reis, Lori Hlavac, Anne Pauley, Tim Reis and Sue Josefson. Serving as casket bearers were Kevin Hlavac, Bill Bruck, Dan Josefson, Marty Calkins, Travis Rust and Wes Clay. Interment was held on Saturday, February 7, 2004 at 2:00 PM at St. Ansgar Cemetery in St. Ansgar, Iowa.
