Joseph "Joe" Martykan
Joseph "Joe" Martykan, age 92, of Osage, died Saturday, July 3, 2010, at Mitchell County Regional Health Center Hospice Unit in Osage. According to Joseph's wishes, no public services are planned. Joseph has donated his body to the University of Iowa Anatomical Department with the hope that his gift will assist research.
Joseph "Joe" Frank Martykan was born July 21, 1917, in Chicago, Illinois, the son of Joseph and Mary (Kolar) Martykan. At age three, the family moved to Mitchell, Iowa. He graduated from Mitchell High School. He then went to Chicago where he worked at various jobs. Joseph served in the U.S. Army during World War II and spent much of his service time in Australia. He was discharged in 1945 with the rank of sergeant.
On January 6, 1951, he married Opal "Cookie" Cook. They lived in St. Ansgar and later moved to Osage. Opal passed away April 8, 2000. Joseph worked for the Iowa State Highway Department for 34 years, retiring in 1992 as a highway maintenance foreman. He entered the Faith Home in March of 2004.
Joseph is survived by his sister, Alice Wolff of Charles City; two nephews, Russell (Linda) Wolff of Charles City, and Gerald (Vi) Jurasek of Mason City.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Opal; a sister, Frances Jurasek; two nephews, Larry Wolff and Ronald Jurasek.
