Mease Gilles died early Saturday morning at his home here. He had been ill for several weeks and his death was not altogether unexpected.
For several years Mr. Gilles had been in the automobile business in Osage, being a member of the firm of Olson & Gilles. He came here from New Haven, where he operated a general store for many years.
Mease Gilles was born April 12, 1863, at Calumet Harbor [n.b. Fond du Lac County], Wisconsin, to Mr. and Mrs. John Jacob Gilles. The family moved to New Haven, Iowa, when he was about 18 years of age and bought the farm now owned by Pete Brandt.
Mr. Gilles was married to Annie Kleckner in 1884, and they lived at the parental Gilles home for the first four years of their married life. Then they went to Park Rapids, Minnesota, where they lived for two years, returning then to their hometown. For seven years Mr. Gilles was employed as a clerk in the Robert Riordan grocery store; then he bought the place and operated it with the assistance of his family for twenty-eight years.
Mr. and Mrs. Gilles raised a fine family of children. The eldest, a daughter, died when six months of age, but the others, with their mother, survive. They are: Earnie, Osage; Guy, Stewartville, Minnesota; Mrs. Myrtle Fox, Spooner, Wisconsin; Mrs. Mary French, Iowa Falls, Iowa; Mrs. Rose Ginsterblum, Sheboygan Falls, Wisconsin; Mrs. Agnes Weber, Osage; Vincent, Chicago; and Mrs. Bernice Helfter of New Haven.
Relatives from away to attend the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Herman Rupp, Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, and Mr. and Mrs. Albert Bauer, Wanston, Wisconsin. All of the children were present. Funeral services were held Monday morning at the Sacred Heart church, with the Rev. Fr. Martin reading the mass, and burial was made in the New Haven cemetery.
