Charles Smutney, Riceville dies
Last rites for a Riceville man, Charles Smutney, 86, were held last Saturday morning at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Riceville.
Mr. Smutney died February 20, 1980 from heart failure. The Reverend Gregory Hemesath, pastor, was in charge of the funeral mass and burial was in the Wayne Cemetery near McIntire.
Arrangements were by the Conway Funeral Home.
Charles Anthony Smutney was born June 18, 1893, in Carroll, the son of Ignatius and Mary Wagner Smutney. He received his education in schools in Audubon and Des Moines, and also attended Iowa Business College in Des Moines. He came to Riceville in 1917. He had previously lived in Nebraska, Wyoming, North and South Dakota. He was owner of a variety store in Riceville.
Blanche Boyd and Mr. Smutney were married February 28, 1924. He and his wife had resided at the Riceville Rest Home the past year.
Surviving are his wife, Blanche, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by an infant son; his parents, four brothers and three sisters.

4. Blanche is a half sister to the Archie McClain who is also buried in the Wayne Cemetery.
5. Blanche's mother's maiden name was Nettie Emerson. It is believed that Nettie married Oliver Boyd, and later Jerome McClain. Nettie McClain was still alive in the 1920 Census living in Jenkins.
6. There was an infant son mentioned in Charles Smutneys obit that I believe is the Ronald Grant Smutney 1926-1926 in the Liberty Cemetery.
