St. Ansgar, Iowa -- Funeral services were held on Tuesday for August Edward Paul Groth, who was born on December 30, 1898, the son of John and Hanna Groth, on a farm in Otranto township, Mitchell County, where he lived the remainder of his life.

He was baptized in the Lutheran faith, and confirmed on Mar. 31, 1912. He operated the farm of his father.

He was married on April 24, 1930, to Mabel Haugen of Story City, Iowa; and they continued to farm until his death.

He was struck by lightning on the farm last Friday and died instantly.

He leaves his wife; four sisters: Mrs. Albert Friese, Osage, Mrs. Henry Pagel, St. Ansgar, Mrs. Ed Baldner, Toeterville, and Mrs. Paul Behl, Osage; three brothers: Henry, Robert, and Ervin, all of St. Ansgar.

He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church.

ST. ANSGAR FARMER
KILLED BY LIGHTNING

August Groth, 50, St. Ansgar farmer, was killed at 2:45 p.m. Friday by a bold of lightning while planting corn with a horse drawn planter. The accident occurred on the farm northwest of St. Ansgar, about 100 rods from the farm buildings.

Mrs. Groth, who was attending a brooder stove at about fur o'clock, couldn't see her husband in the field and upon investigation, she found him dead.

The horses had also been struck by lightning but were recovering.

August Edward Paul Groth was born on December 30, 1898, on the farm in Otranto township, Mitchell county, Iowa, where he lived the remainder of his life.

March 23 of the following year, he was baptized in the Lutheran faith in the Immanuel Lutheran church by Rev. Julius Drexler. he was confirmed by the Rev. Paul Brammer on March 31, 1912. His education was received in the rural school of the vicinity.

As a young man he assisted with the operation of the parental farm, and assumed full charge after the death of his father in 1919.

On April 24, 1930, he was united in marriage to Miss Mabel Haugen of Story City, Iowa, and together they continued to operate the parental farm until his death.

The deceased was in good health and was doing the seasonal corn planting last Friday afternoon when he was struck by lightning during a light rain. His death appears to have been instantaneous.

He is survived by his wife, Mabel; four sisters, Mrs. Albert Frese of Osage, Mrs. Henry Pagel of St. Ansgar, Mrs. Ed Baldner of Toeterville, and Mrs. Paul Behl of Osage; and three brothers, Henry, Robert, and Ervin, all of St. Ansgar.

Throughout his life he was a faithful member of the Immanuel Lutheran church. He devoted himself to his work and to meeting faithfully his obligations associated with his home and farm.

Burial services were held Tuesday afternoon, May 17, at Immanuel Lutheran church in St. Ansgar. Interment was made in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery.
