A Sad Death
We are called upon to relate the circumstances of a sad accident, which occurred in this city yesterday and which culminated in the death of one of her respected citizens, Mr. J. A. Starr. The circumstances of the accident are as follows: Mr. Starr had been hauling wood from a place near Deering's Ford for several days past and yesterday started out about 9 o'clock a.m.
The day was nearly over and his not returning at the usual time caused the family to be come uneasy and anxious concerning him. The son went in search of him and when he arrived near the crossing place at the Deering's Ford, he saw the wagon in the river on which was lying his father's hat and overcoat. This convinced him that all was not right and he returned to the city, and gave the alarm and in a short time a large number of our citizens had gone to help search.
They were about ready to give up in despair, when one of the party on horseback, who had gone down on a by-road leading from the ford toward town found the unfortunate man about eighty rods from the bank lying with his face downwards, cold in the embrace of death. He was covered with mud so that his features were hardly recognized.
He was taken to Samson & Lezotte's drug store, where he was cleaned before taken home to his grief-stricken family, consisting of a wife, one daughter and three sons, who are nearly crazed over the sad fate of their father.
Upon examining the harness it was found to have been cut from the wagon and the general supposition is that the ice broke, letting the wagon and horses down, and in trying to release them he was overcome with the cold and started for home, but was unable to walk and fell down expiring in a short time. The deceased was about 50 years old and during his short residence had made many friends.
