HAVIG, Barbra (Roe) 1860-1939

Barbra Roe Havig was born in Gol, Hallingdal, Norway, on November 4, 1860, the daughter of Ole T. and Marie T. Roe. With the family, she emigrated to this country in the year 1867, settling on a farm west of St. Ansgar. She has lived in this community since that time except for a few years, which she spent in Bellingham, Washington, with her husband and family.

On February 7, 1890, Barbra Roe and Andrew F. Havig were united in marriage. They went to Bellingham, Washington in 1893 to live, returning to St. Ansgar where they have maintained a home since.

To this union were born six children, five of whom survive, Mrs. K.O. Volk of Northwood, Iowa; Oscar at home; Leonard T. of Rugby, North Dakota; Harold R. of Owatonna, Minnesota, and Ray W. of Des Moines, Iowa. Also surviving are four sisters, Mrs. Margit Tollefson of San Jose, California; Mrs. Ella Magnesen and Mrs. Leva Tuff of St. Ansgar, Iowa and Mrs. Edwin Evans of Ulen, Minnesota; and two grandchildren, Robert and Barbara.

For several years Mrs. Havig has been in poor health, submitting to several operations. She rallied from each illness, but became gradually weaker, and on March 11, 1939, she passed away quietly in her own home after a short illness.

The deceased was in close contact with the Lutheran church and its activities throughout her life. She was confirmed on October 3, 1874, by the Reverend J. Olsen. On their return from Washington, she and her husband affiliated with the First Lutheran church in which she has maintained membership since. She was active in the Ladies Aid and Cemetery societies until she was unable, by infirmities, to take part.

She was a kind and loving wife and mother, thinking always of the welfare of others rather than her own. Throughout her long period of poor health she was cheerful, patient, and uncomplaining until the time God called her to her well-earned rest.
