Magnus O. Sponheim, 1857-1936

Magnus O. Sponheim, for more than half a century a resident of Mitchell County, died last Thursday at his farm home in Cedar Township. The immediate cause of his death was heart trouble, though he had been a long time sufferer from asthma.

Magnus O. Sponheim, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ole Sponheim, was born at Ulvik, Hardanger, Norway on November 27, 1857. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran church of his native place and also received his secular education in the schools of Norway.

At the age of 25 years, he came to America and worked as a farm hand for about five years, both in this community and near St. Ansgar.

On June 11, 1887, he entered into matrimony with Miss Guro Bergo. The first three years of their married life they lived on a farm near St. Ansgar, but in 1890 they moved to their own farm in Cedar Township, where they lived until 1923, when they moved to Osage and continued to live about seven years.

After the death of his wife on February 4, 1930, he moved back to his farm in Cedar Township, remaining there until his death on July 23, 1936.

In his wedlock five children were born. One son, Ole J., preceded him in death on January 10, 1919. The following children survive: Mrs. Melvin (Sena) Lunde, Arthur, and Ingvald, all of this community, and Mina, of Minneapolis, MN. Eight grandchildren and the following three brothers also survive: Helge, of Eau Claire, Wiscosnin, Endre and Amund, of St. Ansgar, Iowa.

The departed brother has suffered from asthma for many years but it was only during the last month that he was confined to his home because of gradually failing health. Blessed be father’s memory.

The funeral services were conducted by the Rev. O.C. Myhre from the home at 10:30 and at the Rock Creek Lutheran Church at 11 a.m. on July 25, 1936. Interment was made in the Rock Creek cemetery.
