OBITUARY: Helen Norby, 1916-1997

OSAGE, IOWA-- Helen Norby, 81, died Friday, August 15, 1997, at her home.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, August 19th, at Rock Creek Lutheran Church with the Rev. Dennis Hanson and the Rev. Roy Ott officiating. Burial will be in Rock Creek Cemetery.

Helen Norby was born May 23, 1916, at Mitchell.

Survivors include two daughters, Cheryl Norby Jerabek of Orlando, Florida, and Carol Norby Dodds of San Diego, Calif.; two sons, Terry Hartwig of Clinton, Mississippi, and James Hartwig of LaHabra, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, first and second husbands, one grandson and one brother.

The Champion Funeral Home, Osage, is in charge of arrangements.

"When the son, Kenneth Norby, came home from service, he took over the farm with his wife, Helen Klinger Hartwig and her two sons, Terry and Jim Hartwig. Kenneth and Helen were blessed with two daughters: Cheryl and Carol. A lovely new house was built in the early 1950's. Kenneth passed away in January 1959. Helen continues to live on the farm, renting out the land. - Thanks to Gertie Sponheim."

Therefore, Helen's second husband was Kenneth Norby.

Helen May Klinger was born on May 23, 1916 at East Lincoln, Mitchell county, Iowa to John Anton Klinger and Ida Rusten (Ruston), one of their two children. She had a brother, Alton (Ike).

Found in the 1920 - 1930 censuses living at Mitchell, Mitchell, Iowa:
1920: John A Klinger 40, Ida Klinger 32, Alton R Klinger 6, Helen M Klinger 3 yrs 9 mos.
1925: John A Klinger 25, Ida Klinger 37, Alton R Klinger 11, Helen N Klinger 8.
1930: John A Klinger 50, Ida Klinger 42, Alton R Klinger 16, Helen M Klinger 13.

Helen married Harold Leonard Hartwig on July 6, 1937 at Waterloo, Black Hawk, Iowa. The couple had 2 sons and lived for a while in California.

Found in the 1940 census at Osage, Mitchell, Iowa: Harold L Hartwig 25, Helen M Hartwig 23, Terry Gene Hartwig 2.

Six years after Harold's death, Helen married Kenneth Irving Norby on January 10, 1951 at Mason City, Cerro Gordo, Iowa. The couple lived on a farm in Cedar township, Mitchell County, Iowa and had 2 daughters.

Helen operated a dry cleaning route for several years, was active in the Rock Creek Lutheran Church choir, taught piano lessons and served as a 4-H leader.

She died August 15, 1997 at Osage, Mitchell, Iowa and was buried at the Rock Creek Lutheran Cemetery, Meroa, Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa.
