Obituary-Schmidt
Carl Frederick, second child of Wilhemina and Ludwig Schmidt, was born May 6, 1846, at Stoelitz, Province of Pomerania, Germany. Here he spent his childhood days with his three brothers and three sisters. He attended school at Colpin, a nearby village, until the date of his confirmation, being brought up in a Christian manner and received into the Evangelical Lutheran church May 18, 1860, of which he has ever been a faithful member.
He was strong and robust until the age of 18, when he had a great misfortune, caused by springing from a wagon with his foot asleep. This caused him much suffering, but he was gradually able to perform the duty of a shepherd.
In the fall of 1872 he, with his cousin, William Schmidt, emigrated to America, settling near Milwaukee, where he was engaged in farm work for two years; thence coming to Mitchell county.
Aug. 28, 1879, he was united in marriage with Josephine Haberman. This union was blessed with six children, all of whom are living with the exception of an infant son, who preceded his father into eternity. They lived in Mitchell for a time and in the spring of 1897 moved to a farm where he resided until the end.
In 1903 he was taken to Iowa City to receive treatment for his limb. This proved helpful for a few years. He was always cheerful and enduring, trying never to complain of his pains, which at times were intense.
During the last two weeks he rapidly failed in strength and on Wednesday, May 4, at 11 a.m. peacefully fell asleep at the age of 74 years, 11 months and 28 days.
The deceased leaves to mourn his departure, his wife, an only son, Frank, four daughters, Ida, Helen, Frances, and Mrs. J. A. Rogers. He also leaves five grandchildren and one brother, Fred, of Minnesota.
The community has lost a loyal Christian man, a true neighbor, the church a faithful member and the home a kind and loving father and devoted husband.
Funeral services were conducted on Friday at 2 p.m., from the home, in his church at Mitchell, by the Revs. Gemmaelich and Hankaminer, of Tripoli.
Interment was in the beautiful Oak Grove cemetery.
