January 1917: Mr. C Halfman, Pioneer Settler, Passes Away After Illness of Long Duration.

Mr. C Halfman, an aged man residing for many years southeast of Stacyville, passed away Friday afternoon, January 12, 1917, at 2:45, after a long duration of illness. His age was 80 years, 24 days. He was born December 29, 1836, at Reimund, Kreis Adenan, Rhyne Provinz, Germany. Came to America during the year of 1844 and located at Fond du Lac, Wis.

He was married in 1860 at Johnsburg, Wis., to Anna Merten. She was the mother of three children as follows: Mrs. Jos. Hoffman, Canby, Minn.; Mrs. J. P. Durben, Meyer, Iowa; Phillip Halfman, Peebles, Wis. After the death of Mrs. Halfman he married Eve Sontag, in 1866, and a union of eight children were born to this happy couple, namely: Mrs. A. Schneider, Melrose, Minn.; J. G. Halfman, Wood Lake, Calif.; Mrs. P. Heimer, Adams, Minnesota; Anton who died in Dakota, Lizzie, who died in Johnsburg, Wisconsin, age 1 year; Henry, Stephen, Minnesota; Theresia, who died of diptheria, age 13, and Mrs. A. Kraemer, Campbellsport, Wisconsin.

During the year 1876 he moved to Stacyville, Iowa, and located on a farm two miles southeast of town, known as the Penneyville district. His second wife passed away and left him with a large family.

Later in the month of November 1886, he was united in marriage to Lizzie Gerhartz of Stacyville. Ten Children were born, namely; Joseph, George, Christine, Mike, Aloysius, Albert, Hubert, Paul, Joseph and Peter, the latter two whom died in childhood. At present the family are all at home, the first family reunion in 20 years.

The funeral was held Tuesday morning at St. Mary's Catholic church in this city, services being conducted by the Rev. Jos. M. schlueter, and interment was in St. Mary's cemetery. A great many friends and neighbors of the deceased came from Meyer, Adams and Johnsburg to pay their last tribute of respect and love, and the procession which formed to accompany the remains to their last resting place was very large.

Grandchildren from a distance at the funeral were Miss Anna and Rosa Hoffman, Canby, Minnesota; Miss Tillie Schneider, Owatonna, Minnesota; Jos. Halfman, and brother John, of Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, who is 10 years his junior.

His death is mourned by all who knew him, and his family have the sincere sympathy of everyone in this community.
