OBITUARY: Roger Fay Clayton, 1947-2003

A "Celebration of Life" service was held for Roger Fay Clayton, age 56, of Earlham, Iowa, on July 28 at the Earlham Presbyterian Church. Burial with military rites was in the Earlham Cemetery Tuesday, July 29. Roger died Thursday, July 24, 2003 from complications of cancer. His suffering was removed as he went home to meet our heavenly Father and be reunited with his mother and father Hedwig "Hattie" and Harold Clayton.

Roger was born in Osage, Iowa and raised in Riceville. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in Viet Nam as a sharp shooter. He was a graduate of Utah Technical School with a degree in machining and welding and had the opportunity to live in numerous areas of the United States, including Minneapolis, Salt Lake City, Dallas, Osage, and then settling down in Earlham in 1999.

Roger was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and a member of American Legion Post #158 of Earlham and the VFW of Osage, Iowa. He was an avid card player and took great pride in his work as a tanker driver for Sinclair Oil. He thoroughly enjoyed his family, friends, fishing, hunting, playing cards, playing pool, cooking, watching TV, particularly Dr. Phil and Oprah, his cats Molly and Bello and anything that brought laughter to him and others around him.

While in Utah Roger served as an Eagle Scoutmaster, president of the Salt Lake Invitational Pool League and was a U.S. Regional Pool champion for six consecutive years. He will be remembered for the strength and approach to life he demonstrated throughout; for being honest, direct and a compassionate human being; for being willing to silently sit back and allow others to error and quietly teach the lesson, his sense of humor and for having the gift to forgive and forget. Hopefully, this footprint has left a trait for us to follow.

His survivors include his wife Barbara; his daughter Denise and her fiance' Rich; grandchildren Cacy, Maegan and Alexis; sister Hazel Hodges; brother David and several nieces and nephews as well as numerous friends.
