HELFTER, DERFUS, CARROLL

OSAGE, IOWA - Funeral rites will be Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at St. Peter's Catholic Church, New Haven, for George L. Helfter, 78, who died in his sleep Thursday night. Burial will be in St. Peter's Cemetery. Rosary at the Carroll home Friday evening. He had been in good health and death came unexpectedly.

Born to Lorenz and Catherine Helfter in August, 1872 in New Haven. Five years later the family moved to Thorpe, Wisconsin, where in 1892 he married Mary Derfus.

His wife died in 1895, leaving one child, now Mrs. Henry Carroll of New Haven with whom Helfter has lived for many years. He returned to New Haven following the death of his wife and in 1900 married Harriet Carroll of New Haven. She died in 1911.

Survivors include five children: Mrs. Henry Carroll, Lorenz, and John Helfter, all of New Haven, Joseph of Doland, South Dakota and Mrs. Howard Hawley of Minneapolis, Minnesota; one sister, Mrs. Eli Grand Pre, Aberdeen, South Dakota, and 19 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded by his two wives, a daughter Rose, brother Lorenz, and four sisters.
