Tollef Grove was born in Alsa-Prestegjeld, Norway, August 20, 1831. At the age of 21 he emigrated to America; stopped in Wisconsin, where he remained until the following spring, when he came to Iowa with Rev. Clausen's Norwegian Colony and purchased and settled on the farm in Otranto township which was his home until death, a period of more than 52 years. In 1857 he was married to Ingeri Olson who survives him. Nine children were born to this union, four of whom survive. There are Carl, now a prominent merchant of Great Falls, Montana; Gurine, wife of G.O. Brenna who resides on the old homestead; Annie, wife of P.O. Brenna, who resides on a part of the old homestead; and Ole who always remained at home. They were all present at the funeral.
Mr. Grove was an active man and always ready to do his part in promoting the interest of agriculture. In the latter part of the seventies the development of the newer countries attracted his attention and he began to make journeys to western Minnesota, then the Dakotas and even as far as Montana. These trips were made regularly twice a year and they were continued for nearly thirty years. In that time he traveled enough to have gone around the world twice. Not only did he do this but he purchased many pieces of land, holding a quarter section in Steel Co., N.D. and one in the northwestern part of that state for development.
In politics Mr. Grove was a republican and during his life he held many positions of trust. The funeral was held Tuesday, December 26 at the Norwegian Lutheran church, of which he has been a life long member, and was conducted by the pastor Rev. Waldeland. The large number who were in attendance and followed his remains to their last resting place in the N.L. cemetery attest the high esteem in which he was held by his acquaintences.
