DEATH OF ERIK GUNDERSON

On Tuesday the sufferings of Mr. Erik Gunderson were brought to an end and he passed to the Great Beyond, from whose shores none who go ever return, after an exceedingly active life.

The funeral will be held at 12:00 o'clock at the house and 1:00 o'clock at the Church on Saturday.

OBITUARY

Erik Gunderson was born October 31, 1842 in the Roloog clerical circuit, Nummedal Norway. He emigrated to America in 1858 and settled near St. Ansgar, Mitchell County, Iowa where he has since resided. He was united in marriage to Louisa Gunhilda Helgeson May 20, 1869. She died February 9, 1891. This marriage was blessed with 11 children of which the oldest, Hanna Laura died August 28, 1891. The youngest, Elevina Lorine also died the same year as her mother, passing away May 3rd, 1891.

The children who survive him are John of Anita, N.D.; Melvin of Anita, N.D.; Emil of Ray, N.D.; Mrs. E.A. Beck of Meltonville, Iowa; Gustav who lives on the old homestead; Marie, Emma and Josie who are still at home. There are also seven grandchildren.

On January 12, 1893 Mr. Gunderson married Miss Ragnild Halstensen of Clayton County, Iowa. She also survives him and together with the children greatly mourn their loss.

Mr. Gunderson is survived by two sisters of whom Mrs. Wm. Williams at Crookston, Minn. and the other, Joren Erickson, is present at this funeral tho she has reached the advanced age of 79 years.

Mr. Gunderson was taken sick with puemonia on Thanksgiving Day last fall. He recovered from the attack but has never recovered from the after effect of the disease. He lingered on gradually growing weeker, till death ended his suffering at 1:00 p.m. October 27, 1908.

Erik (Erick) Gundersen (Gunderson) was born October 31, 1842 at Numedalen, Rollag, Buskerud, Norway to Gunder Gundersen and Liv Petersdatter.
He was baptized on November 26, 1842 at same. Birth/baptismal record found at Norwegian Digital Archives on-line for Rollag, Buskerud, Norway, 1828-1848, pg 90.

Erik was confirmed on June 28, 1857 at Rollag. Confirmation record found at Norwegian Digital Archives for Rollag in Rollag, Buskerud, Norway, 1857-1887, pg 101, entry #10: Erik Gundersen Berjorden (sp?), parents Gunder Gundersen and Liv Pedersdatter.

He left Rollag to emigrate to Newburg, Mitchell, Iowa in May/June 1858 with parents and sister Sigri. Emigration record found at Norwegian Digital Archives for Rollag, Buskerud, Norway 1847-1860, page 369, entries # 59-81; Gunder Gundersen age 63 Bjerkjerden; Liv Pedersdatter 61; Sigri Gundersdatter age 20; Erik Gundersen age 16.

Found in the 1860 census at St Ansgar, Mitchell, IA: Peter Gunderson 30, Gunder Gunderson 66, Leave Gunderson 64, Edward (should be Erick) Gunderson 18, Sarah Gunderson 20.

Erik married Louisa Gunilda Helgeson on May 20, 1869 at probably First Lutheran Church, St. Ansgar, Mitchell, Iowa.

The couple had 11 children: Hannah Laura, John George, Annie Petrina, Carl Gustave, Emil Lauritz, Leve Gunilde, Melvin Annis, Ellen Maria, Emma Helena, Genia Josephine and Elvina Lorena.

Found in the 1870 - 1900 censuses at Newburg, Mitchell, Iowa:
1870: son Lowery, age 4/ Lausen Livaldsen (sp?) the hired man.Erik Gunderson 27; Louisa Gunderson 20; Lowery Gunderson 4/12 (son);John Holgerson 76 (Louisa's father);Anna Holgerson 50 (Louisa's mother);Lucinda Holgerson 15; Lansen Twlseson 21 (Hired man).

1880: Erick Gunderson 37, farmer, Louisa Gunderson 31, Laura Gunderson 10, John J. Gunderson 8, Patrena Gunderson 5, Gustave Gunderson 4, Emiel Gunderson 2, Levie Gunderson 7m, Halver Larson 20 hired hand, Ole Olsen 21 hired hand, Cristie Severson 22 servant, Julia Severson 20 servant, Ella Larson 17 renting a room, Knud Gunderson 47 (Erick's brother) no occupation, just arrived from Norway, Trenre Gunderson (Knud's wife) 55.

1885: Erick Gunderson 42 ,Lovisa Gunderson 34, Laura Gunderson 14, John Gunderson 13, Petrina Gunderson 10, Gusta Gunderson 8, Amil Gunderson 7, Lave Gunderson 5, Melvin Gunderson 2, Maria Gunderson 1, Mathia Findstad 35, Olans Larsen 32. 1895: Erick Gunderson age 52.

Louisa died in 1891. Erik married a second time to Ragnild W. Halstensdatter on January 12, 1893 at St Ansgar, Mitchell, Iowa. They had no children.

Erik was a farmer. He died October 27, 1908 at Newburg, Mitchell, Iowa and was buried at the Evergreen (also known as First Lutheran) Cemetery, St Ansgar, Mitchell, Iowa.

Erick Gunderson was born in Numedalen, Norway and died at St. Ansgar, Iowa in 1908. Coming to the U.S. the summer of 1858, when he was 16 years old, he continued to reside at St. Ansgar the remainder of his life and became a very extensive farmer, owning as he did six quarter sections of land. The Republican party had in him one of it's most zealous supporters and he was long active in local politics. For years was a member of the school board. In fact, he was a prominent factor in his community. The Lutheran Church was his religious home and he was one of it's most consistant members, governing his life according to its teachings.

Excerpt from "North Dakota History and People - Outlines of American History", Vol. 3, Pages 474-475. The S. J. Clarke Publishing Company 1917, under the biography of Emil L. Gunderson: Erik Gunderson, a native of Norway came to America at the age of fifteen years, making his way to Mitchell County, Iowa in 1858. There he worked as a farm hand for a few years and with the money thus earned, purchased a fine farm near St. Ansgar, Iowa, which he owned and occupied for fifty-five years, there remaining until his death. His second wife, who was born in Winneshiek County, also passed away on the old home place.
