Jacob A. Groth, son of Assor H. and Kjersti H. Groth, was born at St. Ansgar, Iowa, November 10th, 1855. He was baptized by Rev. Clausen December 2nd, 1855, and confirmed by Rev. Clausen on April 23rd, 1871, at St. Ansgar, Iowa. He attended the public schools near St. Ansgar, Iowa, the Cedar Valley Seminary and the Augsburg Seminary at Minneapolis, finishing his education there in 1876. Mr. Groth took great interest in community and political matters and served as township assessor for a long number of years. He also took great interest in the affairs of the local and general church and served the First Lutheran Church at St. Ansgar as its secretary for twenty-four years.

Mr. Groth married Cecelia S. Halstenson, Elgin, Iowa, on December 29th, 1882. Rev. J.A Bergh was the officiating clergyman. She passed away June 3rd, 1919. This union was blessed with five children; Clara Julia Groth, Adolph Sigurd Groth, Alma Grace Groth, Joseph Clarence Groth and William August Groth all of St. Ansgar, Iowa.

Mr. Groth is survived by his aged mother, four brothers, two sisters, and by all the children above mentioned and one grandson, William Jacob Groth.

Mr. Groth had enjoyed exceptionally good health during his long life, rarely, if ever, needing the attendance of a physician. Some time last April he noticed an ailment coming on and sought medical advice. His condition gradually accentuated itself until it became evident that he must seek the assistance of experts like those at Rochester. He went there, but only to be told that he had abdominal cancer and that they could do nothing for him. After returning from Rochester he arranged all business matters and when this had been accomplished he was happy and carefree, often stating that he was now ready to go any time the Lord would call him. He died very quietly and peacefully on Friday, October 23rd, 1925 about the noon hour.

The funeral took place at the First Lutheran Church, St. Ansgar, Rev. M.E. Waldeland officiating on Monday, October 26th, 1925, at one o'clock p.m. Evangelist Scotvold, who was in St. Ansgar at that time, spoke in the Norwegian language and Rev. Waldeland delivered the English sermon. Sophus Blakestad of Otranto, Iowa, sang two of his favorite hymns. Mr. Groth was laid to rest at the Evergreen cemetery north of St. Ansgar.

Card of Thanks

For the many acts, tokens and expressions of love, sympathy and kindness that have been in evidence during Jacob A. Groth's sickness, after his death and at his funeral, we wish to express our most heartfelt thanks, with the prayer that the Lork will richly bless and repay everything that has been thus done in His name.

The Children, Mother, Brothers and Sisters of Jacob A. Groth.

[St. Ansgar Enterprise]
