Nicholai Peterson, 1871-1942,

Nicholai Peterson, who for the past fifty years had operated a general store at Meroa, died in Rochester, Minnesota, last Thursday following and operation. Mr. Peterson’s illness came upon him suddenly and he was taken to Colonial Hospital, where surgery was performed, but his illness had advanced too far for him to recover.

Nicholai Peterson Fagerbakken was born on January 29, 1871 on a farm in Cedar Township, Mitchell County, Iowa. His parents were Nils Peterson Fagerbakken and Ingeborg Swenson. He was a life-long member of the Rock Creek Lutheran Church. Here he was baptized and confirmed and this was his church home all the years of his life.

On June 28, 1908 he was united in marriage to Olava Docken, and to this union two sons, Charles and Marion, were born.

Preceding him in death were his parents; a sister, Nettie; a brother, Peter; and his son, Marion.

Those who remain to mourn his passing are his wife, and his son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Peterson. Other survivors include two brothers: Theodore Fagre, of Blooming Prairie, Minnesota and Christ Fagre, of Park Rapids, Minnesota and also Olga Haugen, who was brought up in the Peterson home, and thus seemed almost a sister.

Mr. Peterson passed away in Rochester, Minnesota last Thursday morning, April 16, 1942 at the age of 71 years, 2 months, and 18 days. Friends have said that a guiding star and a wonderful husband and father has left the community. Blessed be the memory of this exemplary life.

Funeral services were held at the Champion Funeral Home at 1:15 and at the Rock Creek Lutheran Church at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday afternoon. The Rev. C.B. Gunderson was in charge of the service and burial was in the Rock Creek cemetery. Mrs. Pervin Berge, Mrs. Alvin Christiansen, and Mrs. Erling Dahley furnished vocal music.

Pallbearers were Herbert Johnson, Henry Nelson, Lawrence Olsen, Gust Olson, Halvor Tinglestad, and Carl Norby.
